The Blood is the Soul (Achrei Mos - Kedoshim)

Apr 24, 2026

We’re going for something bold here.

How do you feel about your blood?

Maybe you grimace just thinking about it. Maybe it makes you feel dirty. Or deep shame around this part of yourself. Maybe you've spent years just managing it, getting through it, apologizing for it.

Or maybe somewhere deep down you've always sensed that something sacred is happening here – but you were never quite sure what.

Your menstrual blood is not a malfunction.

It is the most concentrated expression of your life force leaving your body – making space, releasing what was, creating room for what's coming. Every month your body moves through its own cycle of ending and beginning.

You've been living a sacred rhythm your whole life. And this week’s parsha offers some deeper context.

讻旨执讬志谞侄郑驻侄砖讈 讛址讘旨指砖讉指专謽 讘旨址讚旨指郑诐 讛执讜讗謷

"The soul of the flesh is in the blood."

Rashi jumps in with a fascinating grammatical point. 讛执讜讗謷 is written with a vav – a masculine letter, because dam/blood is a masculine word in Hebrew – but the chirik vowel makes it read as if it's written in the feminine form. This shows us the true oneness – indeed, the interchangeability – of blood and soul (nefesh is grammatically feminine).

Blood is soul.

Blood is life force.

Blood is surrender – and being born anew.

That’s the curious thing about menstruation. It’s the only blood that doesn’t come from violence or injury. It’s the blood of death – and the blood of life at the same time.

It’s the death of the potential that lived in the last cycle. Your body doesn't soften it or skip past it. It descends. It sheds. It grieves the ending.

And yet, the womb renews. The blood of life heralds a new beginning. New hope. New potential.

Even if it’s Acharei Mos. After the death.

Which goes straight into Kedoshim.

Because Kedushah – real holiness  isn't about staying untouched by death. It's about going all the way through it. Letting the blood be what it is. Letting the soul move through you. And returning  again and again, month after month  renewed.

The mikvah isn't the reward for getting through your period. It's where your whole cycle has been taking you.

Death. Soul. Release. Return.

Your body isn't just following something sacred.

It is, indeed, the sacredness itself.
